Gnome Hotkey to Switch Keyboard Layout

Finally I found it: How to configure a Keyboard Shortcut to switch the Keyboard layout.

Go to the Gnome Keyboard Preferences / Layout Options tab. In the section ”Group Shift/Lock behavior” you can choose the shortcut for switching the keyboard layout.

I added another very handy setting: When I switch to a non-default keyboard layout, the Scroll Lock LED on my keyboard is on. You can change this in the last section of the Layout Options tab (”Scroll Lock LED shows alternative group”).

Update: In Ubuntu hardy exists a bug because of which the keyboard layout switching does not work. There are several Workarounds in Launchpad Bug# 196277. One workaround is: put the command setxkbmap int your System→Preferences→Sessions→Startup Programs.

Sometimes a bug occurs that disables keyboard layout switching. There is a workaround for this: Remove the second layout in the Keyboard preferences and add it again.
